In this week’s Throwback Thursday, we turn back the clock to 1992 at the start of Scott Russell’s rapid ascension in the road racing world. This photo shows Russell, on the Muzzy Kawasaki ZX-7R, leading the pack at the 1992 Brainerd (Minn.) International Raceway round of the AMA Superbike Championship ahead of Vance & Hines Yamaha’s Jamie James (2), Ferracci Ducati’s Doug Polen (behind James), fellow Kawasaki rider and defending series champ Thomas Stevens (1), Yoshimura Suzuki’s Britt Turkington (28) and others.
Russell went on to win the 1992 AMA Superbike Championship over Stevens and Polen. In addition to racing here in America, Russell also found the time to do four rounds of World Superbike where he earned three rostrum finishes. The next season Russell went back to WSBK full time and won that championship.
