Supercross: Jason Anderson Awarded Detroit Win
| March 19, 2016
The pattern for much of the 2016 Monster Energy/AMA Supercross Series has been that Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey finishes first or second (he has one third place this year), and in three of the five races he hasn’t won, RCH Suzuki’s Ken Roczen has.
When Roczen has won, he’s had a good start. In the slick and dry conditions at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan, Roczen started well outside the top 10, while Dungey started second behind his teammate Marvin Musquin. Musquin relinquished the lead to Dungey on lap two through the whoops, and that was all she wrote, as Dungey took off to win his sixth race of the season. Well, at least that is what it seemed. After the podium ceremonies, the AMA announced it had penalized Dungey two positions for failing to adhere to a red-cross flag that was displayed on lap seven for a downed rider in a jump section.
As the race continued, though, Musquin crashed with two laps to go and handed second place to Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Jason Anderson, but Musquin recovered in time for third, in front of Yamaha’s Chad Reed and Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Eli Tomac.
After his disastrous start, Roczen could only manage sixth place, and he was fortunate to end up that high in the finishing order, as both BTOSports.com KTM’s Justin Brayton and Suzuki’s Blake Baggett both suffered rear flat tires and chose to pit and have them changed, costing them both two laps.
Anderson, who crossed the finish line in second place, was officially awarded the victory later in the evening. It is his second victory of the year, his first coming at Anaheim I. Musquin ended up second in the results and Dungey third.
