It was a busy weekend for five-time Carlsbad USGP winner Gerrit Wolsink.
The former Team Suzuki MXGP rider from Holland was honored by the Legends And Heroes group Saturday, February 13, during the San Diego Supercross, and then he was the star attraction at the Carlsbad MX Reunion held the next day at the Booze Brothers Brewing Co. in Vista, California, not far from the Carlsbad Raceway site.
Some of those who attended included Torsten Hallman, Gary Bailey, Lars Larson, Billy Silverton, Steve Stackable, Marty Tripes, Broc Glover, David Bailey, Ricky Johnson and the event’s promoter Scott Burnworth.
Wolsink, who was also a full-time dentist by trade, won the Carlsbad 500cc USGP four straight years (1974-1977) against the likes of teammate Roger DeCoster, four-time World Champion Heikki Mikkola and Brad Lackey. His final USGP win came in 1979. The Flying Dutchman, or The Flying Dentist as he was also called, never won a World Championship, but he came close many times.
