Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Joey Savatgy claimed his first supercross win of his career after topping the 250SX class at O.com Coliseum in Oakland, California, January 30. Savatgy’s victory came at the expense of three-time winner Cooper Webb who was leading the race when his bike quit running on the 12th lap of the 15-lap race with what initially appears to be a fueling issue with his Yamaha. He managed to get the bike running again but not until the race was almost over, taking the checkered flag in 21st place.
Savatgy now leads the 250SX West Championship by only two points over Webb, the former points leader.
GEICO Honda’s Christian Craig was the early leader after claiming the holeshot just ahead of Webb but lost the front end of his bike in a turn and went down on the third lap, handing the top spot to the Yamalube/Star Racing Yamaha Team rider, Webb, and second to Savatgy. Craig fought his way up to third before it was all over.
Colt Nichols, on the AutoTrader.com/Rock River Yamaha, ended up taking second place for his career best finish.
Mitchell Oldenburg, on the Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil/Red Bull KTM, took fourth, while Zach Osborne, on the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna, rounded out the top five.
Kyle Peters (Honda), Michael Leib (Yamaha), Kyle Cunningham (Suzuki), Jimmy Decotis (Honda) and Cole Thompson (KTM) completed the top 10 overall.
After four rounds, Savatgy leads the way with 78 points, followed by Webb with 76, Osborne with 73 and Nichols with 65. Craig is fifth with 62 points.
