MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez suffered a broken right fibula after crashing his flat tracker yesterday in a training accident in Spain. The 21-year-old Spaniard will miss next week’s Sepang test and likely the following test in Australia.

Marquez was taken to the Universitario Quirón Dexeus Hospital where Dr. Xavier Mir treated the spiral fracture of the distal third of his right fibula (the smaller of two bones in the lower leg). After undergoing a CT scan and X-ray, the break was confirmed and no surgery was required. There was also no ligament damage.

“The results showed no ligament damage or dislocation and no need to proceed with surgery,” said Dr. Mir in a Honda press release. “I expect he will need three to four weeks to fully recover.”

According to the team, Marquez has already started rehabilitation with magnetic therapy. He will remain non-weight bearing on the leg for two weeks, meaning he will miss next week’s Sepang test and possibly the following week’s test in Phillip Island, Australia.

Marquez is expected to be fully recovered for the opening round of the MotoGP World Championship in Qatar on March 23.

“It was a really unfortunate accident that could happen to anyone at anytime,” Marquez said. “I was rushed to hospital and Dr. Mir treated me, thankfully there was no ligament damage and it seems like a clean break.”
