Rally Navigation Training from Jimmy Lewis

Press Release | December 24, 2013

JLR Off-Road Training will be having a mapbook rally navigation training class in Pahrump, Nevada January 20-22 for riders looking to improve on their rally navigation skills. Whether you are thinking about going to Dakar someday or just want to get started with one of the smaller rallies, we can get you learning the correct way to navigate. The course will be taught by 3X Dakar stage winner and Podium finisher Jimmy Lewis, a master at rally navigation.

The class covers the basics of mapbook navigation, incorporates unique drills so you can practice navigation during every day riding and driving and goes into detail on the ways to limit and minimize mistakes. “I could work with a rider on speed all year and not make them 20-minutes faster on a stage but in a few hours I can easily save them that much time by explaining the way to properly navigate and understand the game of rally,” says Lewis.

Riders will need to be of intermediate level in riding skill, not intimidated by any off-road terrain, especially sand.

For Days 1 & 2:

Bikes need to have 80-miles range, have a full-size scrolling mapbook reader, a resetable odometer and a display for a CAP Heading (often in the GPS). There is a really good IPhone app called Rally Blitz:  http://www.rallyblitz.com/.  Rally Management Services has most of the equipment you’ll need to properly set a bike up: http://www.rallymanagementservices.com/

A GPS that can log tracks and store waypoints is also highly recommended, especially if it can be set to a page with CAP heading, Distance to next waypoint and next waypoint. We use Garmin 60CSX or E-Trex.

There is the option of doing a long stage on Wednesday and bikes will need 120-miles of range and riders will need a SPOT or similar satellite tracking device.

Cost for the class is $800 for the first two days. The cost of the third day depends on the route and the number of riders as minimal teaching will take place.
