NURBURG, Germany (Sept. 1, 2013) – It was another red flag shortened race in Germany and this time it was Chaz Davies breaking through to win World Superbike race two at the Nurburgring, giving BMW a prized victory on home soil.

It marked the third win of the season for Davies, the former AMA road racer from Wales.

The red flag, caused by fluid on the track with two laps to go brought on by a Matej Smrz crash, came just as the top three, Davies, Eugene Laverty and Marco Melandri were involved in a fantastic dice for the top spot.

Tom Sykes took back the series lead by finishing fourth, one spot ahead of series rival and former leader Sylvain Guintoli. Sykes leads Guintoli by a single point, while Melandri has moved into third.

The BMW riders led early with Melandri taking the point and Davies pushing past second-place runner Sykes. Laverty got a good start this time around and by lap four he displaced Sykes for third.

On lap eight Davies moved his way to the front for the first time with a late-braking move. A couple of laps later Laverty forced his Aprilia inside Melandri, standing up the BMW rider their battle for second. Melandri would fight back and regain the spot a few laps later only to lose it again in the closing stages.

The stage was set with any one of the top three ready to fight for victory on the closing laps when the red flag stopped the race.

Davies thrilled German fans by putting the BMW atop the podium.

“It’s funny I have the exact same results as I did last year, a third and a win,” Davies said. “We improved the bike for race two. It was definitely a step in the right direction, even though the lap times were a bit slower my bike was a bit better in certain areas of the track. It was hard to break away. I did all I could to get a bit of a gap. The last couple of laps I put my head down to try to get a little buffer and see if these guys would fight it out, but in the red flag came and I was in the right place at the right time. I was willing to fight for it on the last couple of laps if need be. Sometimes the ball bounces in your favor and that’s what happened.”

Turkey is the next round in two weeks.
