Carlos Checa won’t be racing again the rest of the 2013 season after doctors in Spain discovered that he’d suffered a broken pelvis in his crash during practice at the Turkish round of the World Superbike Championship on Friday.

According to his factory Ducati Alstare team, Checa faces a 10-week minimum recovery.

Checa suffered his crash in Friday’s first session. The Clinica Mobile medical team said the Spanish veteran had suffered a contusion to the thorax and a suspected fracture of the left scaphoid. As a result the Spanish rider was unable to continue with the weekend’s qualifying sessions or races and returned to Spain on Sunday morning in order to undergo further testing, first in the hands of Dr. Turmo of the CAR clinic and then under the care of Dr. Mir.

Unfortunately today’s diagnosis has further complicated Checa’s situation. Since he was having difficulty walking, Dr. Mir carried out further tests that have revealed a fracture of the pelvis – at the point where it joins with the femoral head. He will undergo surgery on Wednesday in the Dexeus clinic.

The long period of recuperation required post-surgery means that Checa will be unable to participate in the final three round of the 2013 season.
