Yoshimura R&D’s Eli Tomac Captures the 250 Championship

Press Release | August 21, 2013

The following is from Yoshimura R&D…

Yoshimura riders made their way to the first ever pro national held at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah. Riders were met with exceptionally dusty and windy conditions for the Utah round, but that didn’t stop Eli Tomac from taking back to back moto wins and clinching the 250 Championship title. Trey Canard also had a great weekend, drastically improving over last week’s hijinks, with a podium and 3rd overall.

Yoshimura-backed GEICO Honda rider Tomac has shown race fans all season that he deserves to take home the 250 championship. And on Saturday, he did just that – clinching the title a round early. As for the rest of the GEICO squad, Justin Bogle put in a good ride with a holeshot in moto 2, and finished a solid 5th overall. Zach Osborne finished in the top 10 on Saturday, but wasn’t near his speed seen earlier in the year. Osborne earned himself a 9th for the day. Wil Hahn wasn’t able to grab his typical back to back holeshots and had to settle with an 11th overall at the Utah round. Tomac’s GEICO teammates sit 5th (Osborne), 6th (Bogle), and 15th (Hahn) in the Championship standings.

Yoshimura-backed Muscle Milk Honda rider Trey Canard retaliated in Utah after a not-so-stellar race last weekend. Canard stepped up to the plate and delivered a double spoonful of top 3 finishes. He stayed out of trouble out front; which was a good plan, considering the carnage happening behind him. Trey Canard took a 3rd in moto 1, and a 3rd in moto 2, for 3rd overall. His performance in Utah puts him 4th in the Championship points headed into Lake Elsinore next weekend. In a scuffle with Malcom Stewart, Barcia rode wide into a left hander off the course and into the track markers, where he was close lined by a guide wire! Barcia remounted, and battled all the way back to 11th before he took the checkers. In moto 2, Barcia stayed out of trouble, and finished directly behind teammate Trey Canard. The Muscle Milk Honda duo of Barcia and Canard are currently 3rd and 4th in the Championship points, respectively.

Yoshimura-powered RCH Suzuki rider Broc Tickle was slightly off pace, from his previous finishes in the 2013 outdoor season. He managed 14-32 for 19th overall. Despite a lackluster finish in Utah, Tickle still holds 8th place in the Championship standings heading into the final round.

Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart suffered a neck injury last week, which haunted him this weekend at Utah. He ran inside the top 5 for quite some time, before he pulled off the track, which resulted in a DNF. Stewart did not line up for moto 2. He is still 5th in the Championship points as the series heads to Lake Elsinore.

Next weekend, Yoshimura riders head to Lake Elsinore, California for Round 12 and the final race of the 2013 AMA Pro Motocross Championship.
