While Rockstar Energy Suzuki’s Clement Desalle won the battle of the British Motocross Grand Prix on Sunday, it was Red Bull KTM’s Antonio Cairoli who won the war, clinching the MX1 title after winning the first moto.
Cairoli completed great season – earning six pole positions, nine GP victories and only missed the podium twice (in this round and the Czech Republic Grand Prix). It all added up to a seventh World Championship – with five of those coming in the MX1 class.
“It is very special to win another Title with KTM because they have always been behind me,” Cairoli said in a press release about his latest championship. “Every Title is different. Of course the first Title is the one I remember the most, but all of them are special. Since my mom passed away all the titles are for her and that keeps me motivated to keep on winning.”

Desalle, who is sitting in a comfortable second in the championship with one more GP to go, won his fourth GP and third straight race with a 2-1 tally. Following him in second was his teammate Kevin Strijbos with two third-place moto finishes; and Honda World Motocross’ Evgeny Bobryshev ended up third with a 4-4 tally. A finally healthy Bobryshev earned his third-straight podium in a row.
Cairoli missed his shot at the podium after a mechanical forced him to withdraw from the second moto.
With Jeffrey Herlings absence in the MX2 class, the races are now wide open. Last week’s winner Dean Ferris, won the first moto on the Monster Energy Yamaha but, like Cairoli, Ferris also suffered mechanical woes in the second moto and the DNF ruined his chances of back-to-back wins.
Instead it was KTM’s Glen Coldenhoff who would take the overall with his 3-4 tally, despite not feeling well on the day.
Britain’s Jake Nicholls put his KTM in second at his home Grand Prix, finishing second and sixth in the two motos, respectively. Third went to Spaniard Jose Butron, making it a KTM MX2 sweep with his 5-3 tally.
