Defending World Speedway Champion Chris Holder underwent surgery on Monday to repair his fractured hip and broken pelvis, the result of his crash on Friday in a British Speedway League match.

Holder slid feet first under the air fence and into a concrete wall on Friday night. In addition to the hip and pelvis injuries, Holder also suffered a broken right heel and broken left shoulder. The shoulder injury won’t require surgery and the heel will be fixed at a later date.

The surgery was performed on the Australian at University Hospital Coventry in Midlands, England, but he is scheduled to be moved to a hospital closer to his base in the Poole area.

Holder is currently third in the World Speedway Grand Prix Series after winning the World Championship last year.
