Great Day For Yosh Riders in Southwick

Press Release | July 1, 2013

The following is from Yoshimura…

The “world’s fastest sandbox” at MotoX338 in Southwick, Massachusetts played host to riders that either love or hate it. 2013 marks the last-ever Pro National at the storied New England course.

In Moto 1, it was Wil Hahn with the Motorcycle Superstore holeshot again, as the Yoshimura-backed GEICO Honda rider grabbed his 3rd consecutive 1st place start in the 3 motos he’s lined up for. Before the first lap was over, GEICO Honda teammate Eli Tomac would slip by and grab the lead. Tomac would pull away from the rest of the pack with championship-winning speed and remain uncontended for the duration of the race. Tomac finished Southwick with 1st place overall, and teammate Zach Osborne joined him on the podium with 3rd overall. Tomac had to battle from the back, all the way to 2nd in Moto 2; where he and Osborne duked it out for a crowd pleasing race of the day. Wil Hahn and Justin Bogle would finish the weekend 38th, and 12th, respectively. The GEICO Squad of Tomac, Osborne, Bogle, and Hahn currently sit 2nd, 5th, 9th, and 20th, respectively, in the Championship points. Eli Tomac is just 7 points shy of the 250 Class leader.

Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart lined up for Moto 1, ready to do battle. As the gate dropped, he rocketed ahead of the field to grab the Motorcycle Superstore Holeshot. Stewart managed to hang on to the lead, extending a gap on the rest of the field. He swapped hard on the face of a rutted jump, and landed with a bad high-side that would take him out of the race. For moto number 2, James got right back in the chase with a top 5 holeshot and was able to stay in the hunt and out of trouble for 4th. He earned 11th for the day, but proved that his outright speed is still on tap. With half of the championship races remaining, Stewart currently sits in 6th place in the points chase.

Yoshimura-backed Muscle Milk Honda rider Justin Barcia worked hard at the front of the pack this weekend. He pulled off a 3rd in each moto, which netted him a podium finish for 3rd overall. Teammate Trey Canard hit the deck pretty hard in Moto 1, and suffered a similar fate to that of James Stewart – over the exact same jump. The crash mangled the number 41 Honda pretty badly, as Canard was forced to pull off the track a lap later. He lined up for Moto 2, and would make a strategic pass on Brett Metcalfe to end the race in 5th place. Moto 2 saw Yoshimura’s Barcia, Stewart, and Canard finish in a consecutive 3,4,5, respectively. After Southwick, Barcia and Canard sit 3rd and 4th in the Championship points, respectively.

Yoshimura-backed RCH Suzuki rider Broc Tickle had another consistent performance in the grueling deep Southwick sand. He finished 11th in Moto 1, and 10th in Moto 2, for 9th overall. Broc’s Southwick weekend earned him enough points to click up a notch in the Championship points, as he now sits in 8th.

Yoshimura R&D riders look forward to racing in the great North, as they prepare to do battle in Round 7, next weekend at Red Bud in Buchanan, Michigan.
