Fox Sports’ Speed Brings Two Days Of Live Coverage From Red Bull USGP

Press Release | July 10, 2013

The following is from FOX Sports’ Speed…

FOX Sports’ SPEED heads to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca (Monterey, Calif.) on Sunday, July 21 to highlight two days of live coverage from the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix starting at 4:30 p.m. ET/1:30 p.m. PT.

On Saturday, July 20, live qualifying for the race begins at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT.

This is round nine of the 18-race 2013 MotoGP World Championship, marking the proverbial halfway point of motorcycle racing’s premiere global series.

A half-hour live pre-race show hosted by long-time SPEED voice Bob Varsha kicks off race day with multiple features; including a profile on defending race winner Jorge Lorenzo, a piece on the breakout season of Cal Crutchlow and a segment analyzing how racers  approach the world famous ‘corkscrew.’

Veteran SPEED motor sports and motorcycle broadcaster Ralph Sheheen has the lap-by-lap call, with racing analyst and AMA Hall-of-Famer Scott Russell joining him in the booth. Series expert Greg White covers all the activity on pit road and in the paddock.

“Circuit of the Americas (Austin, Texas) and Indianapolis Motor Speedway are fantastic venues for motorcycle grand prix racing, but Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is still the spiritual home of MotoGP in the United States when you consider its place in history,” said Pete Richards, FOX Sports’ SPEED coordinating producer. “The grand prix motorcycle world championship really started to gain a foothold in the U.S. starting with that Laguna Seca event 25 years ago.”

Grand prix motorcycle racing first appeared stateside in 1964 and 1965, running at Daytona International Speedway as part of its Daytona 200 weekend. After a hiatus, the World Championship set foot back on U.S. soil in 1988 at Laguna Seca – putting on an annual motorcycle grand prix (except for 1992) until 1994.

A decade passed until MotoGP held another U.S. race, returning to Monterey in 2005, eventually blossoming into three American races this year, including the upcoming Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix on Aug. 18, one of the live sporting events helping FOX Sports 1, the nation’s new sports network, celebrate its launch weekend.

In April, the inaugural Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas took place at Austin, Texas’ Circuit of the Americas.

“I think it’s fitting that Laguna Seca hosts the final MotoGP race that’s broadcast under the SPEED banner,” Richards added. “The track already has hosted 14 motorcycle grand prix races, more than any other track in the United States. It’s truly a special and unique event.”

In addition, SPEED.com also is providing exclusive content from the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix, highlighted by the popular On-Board Pass featuring four additional live camera angles. Three on-board, and a helicopter camera, are available race weekend at… http://stream.speedtv.com/motogp

SPEED.com motorcycle experts Chris Martin, Dennis Noyes, Colin Young and Evan Williams will be on hand to cover the latest storylines, features, highlights, interviews and photos from the weekend.
