Andrea Antonelli killed in World Supersport accident

The second World Superbike race and World Supersport race at the Moscow Raceway have been cancelled because of unsafe conditions due to rain, this following the death of World Supersport rider Andrea Antonelli.
The announcement came following a terrible accident for Go Eleven Kawasaki competitor Antonelli. The World Supersport rider fell on the back straight and with the heavy spray kicked up by a full pack of riders on the first lap he was hit by oncoming traffic. Antonelli was airlifted from the facility to an area hospital. It was later reported that Antonelli died from head trauma.
American Kenny Noyes wrote on Twitter: “I was about 20 yards behind Zanetti & after the impact I went right in between both bikes. It was a terrible accident. RIP Andrea Antonelli”
Lorenzo Zanetti was another rider involved in the accident.
The first World Superbike race ran full distance in spite of a heavy downpour late in the race.
However the following World Supersport was red flagged on the first lap after huge accident on the back straight during the opening lap prompted a red flag.
Racing officials met with riders and it was determined to cancel the remaining World Superbike and Supersport races over safety concerns. The decision was to cancel the round altogether.
