Jorge Lorenzo Honored In Jerez

Jorge Lorenzo remembers the final corner at Jerez as a 10-year-old boy watching Mick Doohan make his move on Alex Criville with Criville crashing out of the 500cc Grand Prix. Tomorrow when he makes his first laps of the circuit in preparation for Sunday’s Grand Prix of Spain, the corner will bear his name.
“Today is a very special day for me,” Lorenzo said today in Spain. “Jerez has always been special. It was the first big track that I ride back in 1997 when I was 10 years old also was the track of my debut. And I won here… I don’t know three or four times in 250 and MotoGP. So to receive this present for me is so special. I think more than being World Champion in MotoGP because there are only a few people that can be World Champion in any class, but even less few people that can have one corner in his name. I want to thank the circuit of Jerez and the city for this honor.”
As for that battle he remembers… well, one of the first people to congratulate him was five-time World Champion Mick Doohan – via his Twitter feed.
“I remember this I was 10 and I watched this racing [battle between Criville and Doohan], the condition was in 2005 more the same moment with Valentino [Rossi] and Sete Gibernau. Also in 2010 I have a big fight with Dani [Pedrosa] there. So it’s probably the most special corner in the track so to have this corner in my name is like a dream.”
