After skipping all of 2012, Red Bull’s Kendall Norman showed up unexpectedly at the opening round of the AMA Racing/FMF/GPR National Hare & Hound Championship Series and ended up taking a convincing win, riding like he’d never missed a beat.

Two-time and defending series champ Kurt Caselli led the early going but apparently suffered a terminal bike issue, leaving him with a DNF at the Desert Motorcycle Club’s 46th Annual Winter Classic, a unique tour of the Johnson Valley Off-Highway Vehicle Area that consisted of just one 80-mile loop.

David Kamo borrowed his Johnny Campbell Racing Honda CRF450X race bike from last year and edged Off-Road Support Kawasaki’s Jacob Argubright for second. Purvines Racing Beta’s Nick Burson and T.J. Hannfin rounded out the top five.

Norman says he doesn’t expect to contest the entire series.
