Towards the end of last season the talk in AMA Pro road racing paddock was of some kid named Garett Gerloff who was turning 16 and ready to turn professional. Anticipation was high as he was expected to make his Supersport debut at Virginia International Raceway. With VIR getting cancelled, everyone would have to wait a bit longer. Turns out, it was worth the wait.
Gerloff made his debut at the New Jersey Motorsports round in the Supersport class and he more than lived up to the hype. He won the first of two Supersport races, turning lap times that would have put him at the front of the Daytona SportBike race. On Sunday, his lap times improved even more even though he ended up second in the red-flagged shortened race by .083 of a second to James Rispoli after basically wearing out his front tire. His best lap from race two was a 1:24.050 – faster than anyone in the Daytona SportBike class. Impressive stuff. No wonder Chuck Graves and everyone else in the Y.E.S. Graves Yamaha team were basically foaming at the mouth in anticipation of the 2012 season.
Unfortunately, the Cinderella story ended up with a bit of a hitch.
