Triumph has further extended its range into a new sector it’s been absent from until now, with the debut of the full-dress shaft-drive Trophy luxury tourer that’s the second member to be introduced of the British manufacturer’s family of bikes employing its new 1215cc three-cylinder 12-valve motor, which made its debut earlier this year in the Tiger Explorer adventure tourer.
Or rather, it’s finally produced the bike that many potential customers have been asking for since the previous Trophy 1200 – a four, not a triple – was phased out a decade ago. In fact, when John Bloor brought Triumph back from the dead in 1990, two of the six bikes he did it with carried the Trophy name – a 900 triple and a 1200 four. Originally presented as sports tourers, they later evolved into more fully-fledged touring bikes fitted with color matched hard luggage. But – still no shaft drive, as Triumph’s customers (including potential police bike purchasers) had repeatedly asked for. Now at last they’ve got it, as Triumph introduces a bike that’s been five and a half years in the making.
