Gary Mathers, and his no bull, tell-it-like-it-is approach to running race teams, was at times controversial, but the results spoke volumes. When he ran Kawasaki’s and Honda’s U.S. motorcycle racing operations, he produced championship by the truckload. A couple of times with Honda his teams swept the board, winning all the championships they entered. In fact, on Mathers’ watch his teams earned at least one championship every season he managed the racing squads.

Mathers also had a keen eye for talent. He hired both Eddie Lawson and Wayne Rainey when they were unknowns…
