World Superbike: Race One At Monza Cancelled

Today’s first World Superbike race at Monza has been cancelled with the series organizers worried that the Pirelli rain tires might not be safe at the high-speed circuit. The race, which started in dry conditions, was stopped after three laps when the rains came and three riders – John Hopkins, David Salom and Sergio Gadea – crashed with hard-luck Hopkins suffering a broken foot in his crash.
“We cancelled it because it is unsafe in these conditions; it is flooded on the other side of the circuit and here would be aquaplaning, so we hope that the weather will be stable, hopefully dry for race two,” said SBK Director Paolo Ciabatti. “We will go on with Supersport if the weather conditions are improving.”
The rain tires had caused concern all week as they were coming apart after just a few laps.
