JGR Yamaha’s James Stewart will sit out his second race of the season on Saturday night, the Floridian opting out of the New Orleans Supercross after “further aggravating” the hand injury he suffered at the Indianapolis Supercross 19 days ago.
Stewart’s already up-and-down season has deteriorated rapidly since he won the Daytona Supercross on March 10. The two-time AMA Supercross Champion crashed and hit his head as the Indy Supercross on March 17 and was later diagnosed with a fractured hand. He then sat out the Toronto Supercross the following week, but returned for the Houston round on March 31. After winning his heat race in Houston, Stewart crashed out of the main event, though apparently without injury.
Now, according to his team, Stewart will miss New Orleans to “allow his hand additional time to recover. Before rejoining the series, Stewart will have the injury re-evaluated by his doctor,” the team release states.
Stewart is currently fifth in the series standings with 178 points – eight more than Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer and 12 more than the injured Kevin Windham.
Stewart’s JGR teammate Davi Millsaps, meanwhile, will be on the gate in New Orleans as he tries to move into second place in the series standings.
