Alessi, Musquin Top Qualifiers At Seattle Supercross

Marvin Musquin let it all hang out in West Lites qualifying.

There were a couple of surprises after the second and final round of qualifying at the Seattle Supercross – neither series leaders Ryan Villopoto nor Dean Wilson’s names were on the top of the charts when all was said and done. But they were close.

Taking top honors in qualifying were Red Bull KTM’s Marvin Musquin in the West Lites class and MotoConcepts Suzuki rider Mike Alessi in the Supercross (450) class.

Musquin maintained his top position with a Lites-best time of 54.121, while second best went to Wilson with a 54.968. They were the only two riders in the Lites division to crack the 54-second mark.

Third quickest was GEICO Honda’s Wil Hahn with a 55.000 and fourth quickest was Tomac with a 55.079.

Cole Seely rounded out the top five with a 55.298.

Alessi came out hot and heavy in the second qualifying session for the 450cc bikes and set the mark to beat right away with a 53.736 and no one could, not even Villopoto, whose best lap was a 54.456. Alessi was the only rider to post a time in the 53-second range.

Mike Alessi was quickest in 450 qualifying but crashed out before it was over. Luckily, he’ll be back for the evening program.

However, the news was not all good for Alessi. Before the session was over, he rode back to the pits holding his arm after suffering a hard get-off over the finish-line double jump. Alessi injured a finger and his collarbone but did not break it. He will be riding in tonight’s program.

Third quickest was Star Valli Yamaha’s Nico Izzi who, along with Villopoto and Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen (fourth quickest), was one of only three 450 riders to finish out qualifying in the 54-second bracket.

Roczen was followed by Davi Millsaps (55.139), Justin Brayton (55.225) and Ryan Dungey (55.280), in that order.
