World Champion and Cycle News Rider of the Year Greg Hancock started the defense of his championship with a bang in the New Zealand Speedway Grand Prix last night, the Californian picking up where he left off last year to take the win in Auckland.

Hancock quickly gave credit to his old friend Billy Hamill, the two working out together in California during the off-season.

Hancock beat Jaroslaw Hampel, Nicky Pedersen and Aussie crowd favorite Jason Crump in the final.

Hancock is four points clear of Hampel at the top of the Grand Prix standings after taking 22 points out of a possible 24 at Western Springs.

“I’ve enjoyed my time here and it’s so satisfying to come away with a win from the first one,” Hancock said. “It has started out tremendously.”
