BMW’s Leon Haslam joined the list of injured on the opening day of the official World Superbike test at Phillip Island in Australia, the Brit suffering a broken lower leg when he highsided his BMW in the last corner during the morning session.
Haslam slapped both ankles hard onto the tarmac and at first the medical evidence pointed at a crack in his right heel, but X-rays later showed a crack across the bottom of his right tibia, where it becomes a ball joint to the foot.
A decision is being made today on whether or not to have a screw inserted to stabilize the joint or whether Haslam could race on it the way it is.
Haslam reported on his Twitter page this morning that the bone may need to be screwed and plated.
“This is just a disappointing situation, as we were making good progress,” Haslam said in a team release. “Right from the start my lap times were not bad. The crash was quite a big highsider just before the start-finish straight. I landed on my heels, and I thought I could have fractured them. The scans later showed I had fractured the end of my right tibia instead. On top of this, I broke a small bone in my left foot, but this should not be a big issue. I now shall keep my fingers crossed that the surgery goes well and I will be back on the bike very soon.”
