Edwards Leaves Camp, Rides Forward Racing CRT BMW/Suter

Colin Edwards’ Texas Tornado Boot Camp ended its successful first season by hosting a number of AMA Pro road racers before the Texan flew off to Jerez, Spain to test the Forward Racing BMW/Suter for the first time. The last of the Boot Camps attracted Vesrah Racing’s Cory West, M4 Suzuki’s Dane Westby, and Latus Motors Racing’s Dustin Dominquez, as well as dirt tracker Lucas Scherb, whose brother Merle is an instructor at the Boot Camp.

“I’m very proud of our instructors, we have professional road racers come to the camp that have plenty of dirt experience and when leaving they all comment on how they learned something they can take with them to use on the track,” said lead instructor Joe Prussiano. “I’m also extremely impressed with our beginner/new riders. We have on multiple occasions taken someone that has never thrown a leg over any type of motorcycle and after four days of instruction we have them feeling confident and in control on the bike, not to mention, they are putting down some impressive superpole times as well.”

At the end of each day, the campers race against the clock in superpole on a course that incorporates the three main tracks. The inaugural season included two and four-day camps, but the 2012 schedule lists only four-day camps, the first of which is already sold out. The January 9-15 camp will host riders from a number of road racing world championships. Edwards missed his first chance to ride the BMW/Suter when he was forced to sit out the post-Valencia test after surgery. The Texan separated his shoulder in the accident that claimed the life of Marco Simoncelli in the Malaysian Grand Prix. Edwards had surgery at the beginning of November to anchor the humerus bone to the shoulder socket. Following a three-week recovery, he flew to Spain earlier this week to test the CRT machine for the first time.

The best of Edwards’ 39 laps today was an unofficial 1:43.9, according to www.motogp.com. By comparison, his fastest practice lap aboard the Monster Tech 3 Yamaha YZR-M1 for this year’s Spanish Grand Prix was a 1:40.188. Equally telling was that Edwards was a second slower than the fastest Moto2 rider, Scott Redding (Marc VDS Racing Team), the young Brit who clocked a 1:42.9.
