Cycle News Staff | June 9, 2011

The project to repave the infield section of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in time for the August 26-27 Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix has begun and is expected to be finished within a week. The new pavement will cover 1.5 miles of the circuit from turns five to turn 16. The existing pavement on the track will be ground down and then repaved with fresh asphalt.

It’s the first time this section of the course has been resurfaced since it was built in 2000 for Formula One. Turns one through four of the 2.621-mile circuit – located inside turn one of the oval – were created in 2008 for the inaugural Red Bull Indianapolis GP and will not be repaved during this project.
