Smith Victorious at Indy Mile

Cycle News Staff | August 30, 2010

Chris Carr was looking to make his historic 200th podium finish a win, but in front of the MotoGP crowd at the Indy Mile it was Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Bryan Smith (pictured right) who took the big win. Carr had to settle for second at round 11 of the K&N Filters Grand National Championship while Kenny Coolbeth rounded out the podium with a third place finish.

“I had dreams about winning this,” Smith said. “We knew when we got to these tracks with the long straightaways, we’d be all right. We’ve been struggling on the half miles, but we’ve been learning a lot.”

Series points leader Joe Kopp led the 19-rider pack into turn one but Carr quickly moved into the lead and held it for three laps until Stevie Bonsey crashed, forcing him to the pits and sending the field to a re-start.

Carr assumed control once again but only a few laps later Smith relieved him of the point. The two continued to pull away from the field while Coolbeth was doign his best to work his way into third from a second-row start.

“Those guys just got away,” Coolbeth said. “I started from the second row and it was pretty much chaos where I was. The first five laps were pretty crazy, that red flag kind of bunched us up again. I couldn’t gain anything.”

Jake Johnson held on to finish fourth followed by Sammy Halbert.

JD Beach was victorious at the Indy Mile, leading the last 11 laps of the Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Grand National Championship main on his Red Bull/Top 1 Oil backed Honda to take the win over Michael Toon and Jeffrey Carver.
