Hayden On Top In AMA Superbike

MONTEREY, CA, JULY 23 – Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Tommy Hayden won the first round of what is expected to be a series of battles this weekend with Graves Motorsports Yamaha’s Josh Hayes at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.Today it was Hayden on top as the first practice session ended on a sunny Friday on the Monterey Peninsula, the oldest of the Hayden brothers lapping at a best of 1:24.988 to top Hayes by .275 of a second.Those two may have company on Sunday, however, as M1 Monster Suzuki’s Jake Holden put in his best effort to date, ending the first day in third and just .400 of a second behind Hayden. Larry Pegram was next on the Foremost Insurance Ducati, .872 of a second behind the leading Suzuki GSX-R1000 of Hayden.Pat Clark Motorsports’ Ben Bostrom was next, heading the surprise of the day – Chris Perris on the Team Iron Horse BMW. Perris led National Guard Suzuki’s Jake Zemke and Jason Pridmore, the latter returning to AMA racing on a Celtic Racing Suzuki GSX-R1000.Attack Suzuki’s Eric Bostrom and Eric Buell Racing’s Geoff May rounded out the top 10.Miguel Duhamel also made a return to the racetrack today, the all-time AMA road race win leader ending the day 15th on the Moto Forza Ducati.
