Moates Cup Announced for U.S.GP

Press Release | May 4, 2010

The following is a press release from USGP Press…When the best motocross racers in the world come to Southern California’s Glen Helen Raceway on May 29-30th it will mark a couple major milestones in the history of motocross. Not only does the event mark the return of the historic U.S. Grand Prix (USGP) concept of pitting America’s best against the world, but it also falls on the 30th anniversary of Marty Moates becoming the first American to ever win the prestigious event.

“We are happy to pay tribute to the top American, by awarding the inaugural Moates Cup… and a nice cash reward,” notes Marty’s brother David Moates. “In short, I think it’s a wonderful idea. It appears to have ‘legs’… both as a tribute, and as a tool to attract racers to the event. The strength may rest in how Marty’s accomplishment is seen. It’s funny… my brother sometimes tried to get me to return to racing long after I had moved on to other interests. Now that he is gone, not only did I find one of Marty’s bikes on craigslist, having restored it, I now enjoy racing more than I ever did. His final gift to me.”

“What better way to commemorate David’s brother beating the Goliath of the mighty Europeans than presenting this award,” adds Moates Cup co-sponsor Todd Huffman, who is just finishing up his film about the 1980 event called, The Carlsbad USGP: 1980, which premieres a month after the U.S. Grand Prix at Glen Helen.

“Personally I think it’s a fitting tribute to Marty as America’s first USGP hero and I’m hoping that it would draw the attention of American riders to get off the sidelines and participate in this international event, just like he did so many years ago,” adds Moates Cup co-founder Scott Cox.

Last contested at Glen Helen back in 1992, the return of the USGP to Southern California recreates a slice of history and serves as a fitting tribute to the 30th anniversary of an American first winning the USGP.

Tickets for the “Race of the Century” as the USGP is being billed, are available at the Glen Helen website www.glenhelen.com as well as at participating local Yamaha dealers. Reserved camping is also available for $50 per spot.
