Happy New Year! Hope everyone had a good, safe holiday season. I had a lot of fun over New Year’s. Nichole and I invited Jake Johnson and his fiancee, Jodi Lewis, and Kenny Coolbeth and his cousin, Morgan, to come up and bring in the New Year with us. We went ice riding with Bryan Smith and had a blast making countless laps on the ice and having fun celebrating the New Year. This was the second year in a row they joined us. Nick Cummings also came and hung out with us. He seems to be coming along very well, doing a lot of physical therapy in Ann Arbor MI. It was good to see all of my buddies over the holidays.
Well, back on the ice for the first race of the year, this time near Denver CO. I flew out Saturday morning the day of the race. For my two Heat races I started 2nd off the pole. JR Schnabel and Jeremy DeRuyter were in my first Heat race. Nothing like going right off the bat with a couple of the toughest guys! I grabbed the hole shot and took off and won the Heat by a pretty good lead.
The second Heat was pretty much the same thing.
I was on the pole for the Main Event with JR right next to me. I didn’t take the Challenge as I felt great in my Heat races and just didn’t want to give JR that big of an advantage. I grabbed the hole shot and they really stretched the track out due to ice wear. I got a little bunched up in turns 3 and 4 and that allowed JR to get a run on me, but I stuck it in there, dove down, and kept him behind me. Sammy Wiggins came up there to mess around also and ended up making up some ground, but just wasn’t quite enough.
I ended up winning the 7th race in a row of ice races entered in the season so far. Things are going well for me in the indoor series this year. The next race is in two weeks in Bloomington, IL on Saturday and then on Sunday, January 24th, I’ll be at the ice race at the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort in Mount Pleasant Mi. I am at the airport as I write this, but don’t think I’m going to be lucky enough this time to get bumped up to first class! I do however have a exit row!! Ha Ha..
