Reed Clinches Title with Overall Win at Budds Creek

After getting off to a relatively slow start in the series, Chad Reed came on strong during the final rounds, wrapping up his first-ever National Motocross Championship with two races to go, after turning in a 2-1 performance at round 10 of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championships at Budds Creek MX Park in Mechanicsville, Maryland, for the overall win. In all, Reed ended up winning six of the last seven motos of the series, and in Maryland, the Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider came from a back-of-the-pack start in the relatively dry opening moto to finish second to Honda’s Davi Millsaps. In the second moto, with a light rain starting to fall, Reed ran down another Honda rider, Ivan Tedesco, to take the lead and the overall win.

Reed came into the race with an 82-point lead over Team Honda’s Andrew Short, and when Short went 7-10 at for eighth overall, Reed left with an insurmountable 104-point lead and the title. Reed also picked up and additional $5,000 for winning the final round of the Monster Energy Triple Crown series.

Second overall went to Millsaps with a 1-6 performance, while Tedesco was third after turning in a 5-3 performance.

Kyle Regal continues to surprise, and claimed fourth overall with consistent 4-4 moto finishes, while Canidae Kawasaki’s Tommy Hahn went 12-2 to round out the top five.

In the 250 division, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer took an impressive second moto win in the driving rain – in a race that was red flagged early (approximately the 30 minute mark) because of the conditions – to claim the overall win with a 2-1 performance.

The rain was coming down so hard in the second moto that rivers of water were flowing across the track, causing unsafe conditions, according to the AMA.

Second overall went to Weimer’s teammate Christophe Pourcel with 1-3 moto finishes, while Pourcel’s nemesis, Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey was third overall after going a 3-4.
