Alessi: “I Don’t Think The Championship Is Over Yet”

One week after suffering a broken kneecap, Mike Alessi reports that he is already back in the gym and looking forward to getting back on the bike soon. While most people would be devastated at suffering a third major injury in a little more than a year, Alessi is optimistic and chomping at the bit to get back into the series as soon as possible.

“I ended up having surgery back east and my doctor did a great job fixing my knee,” said Alessi. “It was the left knee and it basically split it in half… and then I split it again in the top half, so it was in three pieces. They put three screws in it and wired it all back together and it’s as strong as it can be right now. I can walk on it without crutches and I’m already back in the gym trying to make it strong so I can make a good return to racing for this season.”

“Right now, I can do pretty much everything in the gym,” added Alessi. “It’s not as strong as it was because of the surgery, and the mobility is not there, but it is coming around and every day it’s getting better.”

Alessi ended his phone conversation with Cycle News, saying: “As of right now, I really don’t know when I will be able to come back to the series. This is really a frustrating injury, but it’s just a minor setback. But I want that championship and this won’t slow me down one bit. I’m trying to do whatever I can to get this title and I won’t give up. The way I see it now, though, the season has just begun for me. And I just want to say, it ain’t over ‘til it’s over… I don’t think this championship is over yet.”
