Euros Win Red Bull Riders Cup

The Red Bull Riders Cup, billed as the Americans vs. the Europeans in Rookies Cup action, went to the Europeans – hands down, with JD Beach, the American who recently won the European version of the KTM spec series, the top U.S. rider in seventh place. The top AMA rider was yesterday’s AMA Red Bull Rookies Cup winner Jacob Gagne.

But 13-year-old Kentuckian Hayden Gillim gave it his best shot, the AMA regular racing at the front of the pack and battling for victory when he crashed out late in the race held in a steady rain.

Victory instead went to Norway’s Sturla Fagerhaug by 3.4 seconds over fast qualifier Matthew Scholtz of South Africa. Third place went to Brit Matthew Hoyle, some 11 seconds down on Fagerhaug.

Czech Jakub Kornfeil and Spaniard Luis Salom rounded out the top five finishers.
