ALTON, VA, AUG 16: Erion Honda’s Josh Hayes won his second Formula Xtreme race in a row with today’s runaway victory at Virginia International Raceway in Alton, Virginia. Hayes took the lead late on the first of 17 laps and then split. There was no pressure from behind-teammate Jake Zemke wasn’t on pace-so Hayes was able to stretch the lead at his leisure. The difference between Hayes and Zemke was nearly half a second a lap. At the end of 17 laps it added up to 7.797 secs. Zemke, in turn, had 9.38 secs. on the battle for third, the best on the track. The combatants numbered four, then three, then two, with Team M4 EMGO Suzuki’s Martin Cardenas facing off against the slow starting Aaron Gobert (Rockwall Honda). Gobert was in control on the last lap when Cardenas made his run, sealing the spot with the crafty use of a lapped rider on the run to the flag. The gap to Gobert was .068 secs. Attack Kawasaki’s Steve Rapp was half a second back in fifth-he’d run third until the 14th lap-with teammate Chaz Davies sixth. Zemke continues to lead the championship with 267 points to 222 for Rapp and 216 for Hayes. With a 45 point cushion, Zemke needs to score only seven points-a 24th place finish-at Road Atlanta in two weeks time to clinch the title. Formula Xtreme: 1. Josh Hayes (Honda) 2.
