Amateur Racing Returns To Steel City National

Press Release | August 28, 2008

Amateur motocross racers will enjoy a full Sunday of racing this weekend at Steel City Raceway for the first-ever American Motocross Festival, part of the Monster Energy/Kawasaki Pro Motocross National presented by NEXT Financial. Moving Steel City’s pro racing to Saturday opens up a full amateur program the next day, featuring long motos on the same redesigned Steel City track that the pros compete on. A complete list of classes and a pile of special contingency awards and prizes highlight this historic return of amateur motocross to the weekend pro national schedule. As part of the Dunlop Days promotional weekend, every motorcycle class winner on Sunday will receive a free off-road tire from Dunlop. Second place motorcycle finishers will receive a new set of Scott Goggles. And in a unique twist, third-place motorcycle finishers will receive free passes to the popular Rich’s Fright Farm in Smithfield, Pennsylvania for the Halloween season. “Due to the expansion of the AMA pro motocross qualifying schedule, we haven’t been able to host amateur racing on a full weekend day at a national in a long time,” said Event Director Tim Cotter. “This year’s American Motocross Festival puts the amateurs on the full track with a full schedule on Sunday. We expect a big turnout.” The American Motocross Festival features four classes competing in one day on Saturday, August 30th, with practice and qualifying for those classes on Friday, August 29th. The AMA/Toyota Motocross Championship presented by FMF wraps up with the final round of the Monster Energy/Kawasaki Triple Crown of Motocross. Monster Energy Kawasaki backed riders James Stewart and Ryan Villopoto will each battle for a $25,000 Triple Crown bonus. In addition, the second-annual ATV Open hosts the fastest four-wheeled motocross riders in the world, and the Women’s Motocross Association hosts their final round, with Ashley Fiolek aiming for her first professional championship.
