Villopoto Closes In On Lites Title At Glen Helen

Shan Moore | September 9, 2007

Ryan Villopoto all but wrapped up his second-straight Lites outdoor title by claiming the win in the opening moto of the final round of the AMA Motocross Series at Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, California, today.

The Monster Energy Kawasaki-backed Villopoto topped teammates Ben Townley and Brett Metacalfe for the win and now needs only to finish 18th in the final moto to clinch the championship.

Townley grabbed the early lead on the fast, but roughening course, however, Villopoto took over with a pass on Mount St. Helens before the halfway point of the race. From there, Villopoto slowly and steadily pulled away to a three-second margin at the finish.

Metcalfe was a distant third, while Sobe No Fear/Samsung/Honda’s Trey Canard was fourth ahead of Team Yamaha’s Broc Hepler.
