Kanney’s First AMA Win

| July 24, 2006

This weekend, the national Hare Scrambles event saw a new winner, a true ironman of the sport, take his first career AMA win. After racing the World Enduro in Hancock, New York on Saturday and placing ninth overall in E2, Nathan Kanney turned around and drove to Trentom, PA for round seven of the National Hare Scrambles series on Sunday. Although he was bummed to miss the second day of the GP of USA, Kanney’s double-header proved to be worthwhile as he rode to his first Hare Scrambles victory.

Kawasaki’s Travis Green took the holeshot with Yamaha’s Charlie Mullins and Kanney behind him. After the first lap it was Kanney out front with Mullins on his tail. The two swapped leads though the next lap until Mullins picked the wrong line in the mud.

“I saw Mullins pass me and I thought he was still out front until I saw the pit board saying he was in fifth place,” said Kanney. Mullins’ misfortune left him playing catch-up for the rest of the race. On the last lap, Mullins was just a few seconds off Kanney, but the checkers fell for the RER Motorcity rider.

“I crashed a lot today most on the first lap,” Kanney said. “Then I got mad and decide to treat each lap like a test area in enduro race. More or less, I went as fast as I could each lap and stayed focus and it worked for me. I got my first AMA win. This win helps me in the points for the championship. With Jenks finishing fourth I was able to again some points this weekend.”

Third overall went to Travis Green as he battled most of the race with Jenks and Rodgers, who took fourth and fifth, respectively.
