Dowd To Race AMA National Arenacross Round
| October 21, 2005
The following is a release from Clear Channel Entertainment:
AMA motocross/supercross’ ageless wonder, the 40-year old John “Junkyard” Dowd (Chicopee, Mass), announced today that he will race the opening round of the AMA National Arenacross Series at Pepsi Arena in Albany, N.Y. (Oct. 29-30).
Dowd, who this past summer became the oldest man to ever podium in an AMA Motocross Championship race (Southwick, Mass.), brings with him a legion of fans to Albany many of whom watched “Dowdy” race this past summer at Upstate New York AMA Motocross Championship rounds in Binghamton (Broome-Tioga) and New Berlin (Unadilla). Dowdy’s fan base is led by men, ages 35 to 55, that still ride.
“Yeah, I guess I’m carrying the torch for a lot of old racers,” said Dowd with a laugh. “You wouldn’t believe all the guys that show up when I race just to thank me for ‘taking it to the younger guys.’ Funny thing is I don’t really feel 40 when I’m out racing just when I’ve got to get up and head to work the next morning (laughs).”
Dowd, who didn’t start racing professionally until his early 20s, saw some limited action in the AMA National Arenacross Series last year, scoring 131 points and winning numerous motos and “Dash For Cash” events. At Pepsi Arena (Albany) he’ll be racing against a field of riders he’s pretty much old enough to have fathered.
“It’s going to be a fun weekend of racing,” said Dowd. “I just got back from winning a big race over in Sweden, so I’m well rested and looking forward to mixing it up with the guys in Albany.”
