Mammoth Motocross Wraps Up

The final day of the racing wrapped up Sunday, June 26th at the 38th annual Mammoth Mountain Motocross in Mammoth Lakes, California. Honda’s Jeremy McGrath (2) returned to the track, after electing not to ride the previous day, and promptly won the 250 Pro class. For McGrath the win capped off an excellent 2005 showing at the venue. He won two out of the three pro classes, as well as the vet classes the weekend before.
After winning his qualifier McGrath headed into the main event. The start saw Honda mounted Timmy Weigand take the holeshot followed by McGrath, Suzuki’s Michael LaPaglia and Honda rider Daniel Sani. Then, at the end of the first lap, everything changed with a blink of an eye.
With Weigand out front the pack thundered down Mammoth’s famous back straight. Just as Weigand landed off the second of two tabletops he hit a braking bump, his hands blew off the bars and he was sent violently to the ground. With that McGrath took over the lead with LaPaglia moving into second and Sani third. Weigand got up but was taken to the hospital to be check out. At the time it was unsure about the extent of his injuries.
From there McGrath began pulling away from the field. Meanwhile, Sani (168) moved around LaPaglia on the second lap. After that the order did not change. McGrath held a steady nine-second lead over Sani, while Sani did likewise with LaPaglia. McGrath took the win followed by Sani and LaPaglia.
In the 250 Intermediate division Jared Browne took a decisive win. After getting a flat tire in his qualifier he got a bad gate pick in the main but still managed a good start. From there he pulled out to a commanding lead by the conclusion of the race.
