RC, Bubba Sweep Spring Creek

Honda’s Ricky Carmichael and Chevy Trucks Kawasaki’s James Stewart, once again, dominated the racing action at the Spring Creek National today, with both riders sweeping both motos in their respective classes. Carmichael recorded his ninth overall win of the season in the 250cc class, while Stewart posted his eighth overall victory in the 125cc class.

But the talk of the day was Mike Alessi’s debut in the pro class. The 16-year-old rider who just graduated from the amateur ranks said that he was hoping for a top-five finish, or even make the podium. Although he fell way short of his goals, he still announced to the world that he will be a force to contend with in the near future.

In the first moto, Alessi got off to a good start but got bumped around in the first turn and nearly crashed. He saved it only to crash later in the first lap when he tangled with Suzuki rider Sean Hamblin. Alessi eventually finished out the moto in 27th place.

In the second moto, Alessi got a much better start and ran as high as fourth behind Carmichael, Kevin Windham and Sebastien Tortelli (on the third lap), before dropping back a couple of position. Late in the race, Alessi had firm control of sixth place when his Honda suddenly coasted to a stop with a blown engine. He was credited with 25th-place in the moto and 31st overall.

After the race, Alessi admitted that the Nationals are “nothing like racing against the amateurs. They’re real fast and everything happens a lot faster,” he said.

But the day belonged to Carmichael and Stewart. Both riders had little trouble winning today, though Yamaha’s Chad Reed gave Carmichael a couple of good laps in the first 250cc moto.

Second in the 250cc class went to AMSOIL/Chaparral/Honda’s Kevin Windham, who went 5-2, while Team Suzuki’s Sebastien Tortelli took third with a 4-3.

After leading the first three laps of the first moto and then going on to finish second to RC, Reed suffered a DNF in the second moto when he crashed on the blind side of one of the track’s uphill double-jumps. Reed was up and about to re-enter the race when he was T-boned by Hamblin, putting both riders out of the race. Neither riders were seriously injured, but Reed, who rode his bike back to the pits, left immediately after the race to get checked out.

Yamaha’s David Vuillemin (3-4) and Team Honda’s Ernesto Fonseca (7-5) rounded out the top five overall.

In the 125cc class, Stewart again dominated both motos, while Suzuki’s Broc Hepler was also fast and consistent, going 2-2 for second overall.

Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Matt Walker took advantage of good starts and went 3-6 to get on the podium in third.

Honda’s Nathan Ramsey and AMSOIL/Chaparral/Honda’s Ryan Mills rounded out the top five overall.
