Coolbeth Wins Davenport AMA Grand National

KTM/Jones Power Sports’ Kenny Coolbeth scored his first win of the 2004 AMA Progressive Insurance U.S. Flat Track Championships season with a victory at round seven of the series, on the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds half mile in Davenport, Iowa, last night.

Coolbeth took the lead of the race on lap 13, passing his teammate, Joe Kopp, who had held the point until then, with USC Racing/1stlegal’s Terry Poovey running a strong second. Bartels’ Harley-Davidson’s Shaun Russell crashed on lap 17, and Kopp was able to retake the lead. Coolbeth kept took it back on lap 21 and went on to win. Kopp finished second, Coolbeth third.

Kopp’s third-place run allowed him to pull within 10 points of series leader Chris Carr, who finished fifth at Davenport aboard his Quality Checked Certified Pre-owned Ford Racing Harley-Davidson. Carr now leads Kopp, 119-109. Coolbeth is third, with 88.
