Kiwi Sweep in England

| June 1, 2004

The seventh round of the FIM World MX1 and MX2 Motocross Championship in England experienced a series first over the weekend when riders from New Zealand won multiple classes in a motocross GP. Honda’s Josh Coppins posted his first victory of his career in the MX1 class, while KTM’s Ben Townley stretched out his series points lead in the MX2 class with his fifth win of the year.

In the MX1 class, Coppins and Mickael Pichon traded 1-2 moto finishes, with the nod going to Coppins via his tie-breaking second-moto victory. Pichon ended up second, while series points leader Stefan Everts finished out the day in third.

In the MX2 class, Townley won both motos, extending his points lead to 26 over Steven Sword, who finished third at the Isle of Wight Circuit. The Kawasaki rider pulled two thirds on the day.

Second overall with two second-place finishes went to Tyla Rattray, making it two KTMs on the podium.
