Abbott Wins Ocotillo National Hare & Hound
AMA National competition returned to Southern California’s Imperial County and District 38 for the first time since 1986 with Sidewinders Motorsports hosting its first-ever National Hare & Hound, May 16. When the dust settled at the Superstition Dry Lake, Destry Abbott led a Team Green 1-2 sweep with his third victory of the AMA/FMF Racing National Hare & Hound Series, besting fellow KX500 racer David Pearson and Pearson’s cousin, Russell Pearson, who rode a Montclair Yamaha YZ450F to third overall.
Officials, however, later disqualified Russell Pearson for unsafe riding that risked the safety of officials at the finish, notifying him at 10:30 P.M. the following night. At press time, he was in the process of appealing that decision, meaning the race results will remain unofficial until the appeal is decided upon.
Pearson’s DQ moved local hero Aaron Tuck and his Honda XR650R to third overall in his first race back since breaking his collarbone at the San Felipe 250 at the end of February. Team Green’s Brian Brown took fourth place on his KX500, making up ground after a two-kick start, while KTM-mounted Joey Lanza rounded out the top five.
