The second round of the World Off-Road Championship Series was held for the first time at Cross Creek MX in Austin, Texas, February 21-22, and a first-time WORCS winner prevailed. Former full-time motocrosser Bobby Bonds, on a Team Green-backed Kawasaki, took top honors on what turned out to be a race course that many would have guess favored the more off-road savvy riders.
Finishing as the runner-up was another former motocrosser Montclair Yamaha/Zip-Ty Racing’s Nathan Woods, who battled back and forth with Bonds for most of the race. Kawasaki Team Green’s Destry Abbott also had his hands full with a number riders before crossing the finish line in third place. Yamaha-mounted Ty Davis was in the hunt all day as well, finishing fourth ahead of Suzuki-mounted privateer Robert Naughton, who returned to action after skipping the opening round in Texas with an injured foot.
Hare & Hound National Champion Russell Pearson seemed to have a lock on third place late in the race when he suffered a mechanical problem that knocked him out of contention.
Lance Smail, another motocrosser-turned off-roader, who won round one of the series in Mesquite, finished ninth.
