Glen Helen Prepares for Big Weekends

Kit Palmer | June 17, 2003

Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, California, is going to be a busy place the next couple of weekends, as it will be hosting the YHR 12 Hours of Glen Helen and the Vintage Iron World Championship events.

The 12-Hour, round two of Glen Helen’s YHR Endurance Series, is set to get underway this weekend, Saturday, June 21, and entries are still available. Each team is allowed up to four riders, or you can do it solo in the Ironman class. (Two bikes are allowed.) The race starts at 7:30 a.m., so no lights will be needed.

The sixth annual Vintage Iron World Championship will get underway the following weekend, with the festivities beginning on Thursday, June 26, for open practice day on Glen Helen’s vintage track. On Friday, former Supercross and National MX Champion Rick Johnson will be the special guest instructor for the Vintage Iron Motocross School. The racing begins on Saturday with focus on the Vintage (pre-’75) bikes, though there will be an Evolution Support race held earlier in the day. There will also be such activities as a side-car race, a dirt-bike only swap meet, the Parts Unlimited Dealer Challenge race and the Stars Barbecue that caps off the day. Wildcat Studios will also be presenting a special viewing of the motion picture “On Any Sunday.”

On Sunday, the Evolution (Post-’75) and Decade (10 years and older) bikes take center stage, though there will be a Vintage Support race. The Motocross des Nations team race will take place first thing in the morning.

This year, there will be no Yamaha Race of Champions (YROC) competition, but many stars of the past will be racing over the weekend, many of them riding vintage bikes that they made their names famous on. Some of those expected to ride include Rick Johnson, Marty Smith, Broc Glover, Ron Lechien, Goat Breker, Jim Gibson, Scott Burnworth, Brian Myerscough, Micky Dymond, Marty Moates, Jim Holley, Bruce McDougal, Gary Jones and Tom Benolkin. We understand that Johnson is planning on riding a restored 1984 Honda CR250R, and that Glover is going to race an early Honda Elsinore. Lechien is set to ride a Honda CR480, and Jones is planning on riding one of his old Can-Ams.
