RC: Still Going

| March 1, 2003

Ricky Carmichael got off to a fast start in the 250cc main, passing early leader Travis Preston on the first lap. Then, Carmichael just ran – he didn’t run away, as David Vuillemin hung just a couple of seconds back for most of the race, but he ran for the whole race.

Vuillemin hung strong for second, while Chad Reed came from behind for third. Ernesto Fonseca started third and finished fourth, while Sean Hamblin had his best ride of the year, starting near the tail end of the top 10 but finishing a strong fifth.

Ezra Lusk was running just outside the top five when he took a spill and had to stop for repairs. Mike LaRocco didn’t ride his hometown race. And Paul Carpenter showed up on his privateer CRF and made the main again – it seems he’s figuring out this whole supercross thing.

In the 125cc main, Brock Sellards, who missed Friday practice with a hurt right shoulder and arm, grabbed the holeshot, but he was eventually chased down by the impressive Branden Jesseman. Soon after Jesseman made the pass, Sellards went down and eventually finished seventh. Jesseman got the win.

Mike Brown came from almost as far behind as Jesseman did for second, and then Shae Bentley scored ECC Suzuki’s first-ever podium with a strong third-place ride.

Brett Metcalfe rode strong for fourth, while Kelly Smith got his third holeshot of the three-race-old season and finished fifth.

Michael Byrne was a noteworthy no-show as he broke his hand early in the week and reportedly has exterior hardware holding it together. He will be out indefinitely.
