Haydens Going To Del Mar

Paul Carruthers | September 26, 2002
Clear Channel Entertainment’s motor sports division announced today that the Hayden brothers – Nicky, Tommy, and Roger Lee – will compete at the K&N Filters Del Mar Motorcycle weekend, October 4-6.According to Formula USA, the three have secured rides for the Formula USA Short Track National Championship to be held on Saturday night during the thee-day motorcycle extravaganza. The lightning fast 1/8-mile short track proved to be a favorite last year for the fans and riders, with Nicky taking second behind National Dirt Track Champion Terry Poovey. Gates open at 4 p.m. with racing at 6:30 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds Arena.

The Hayden brothers are also looking to compete on Sunday at the K&N Del Mar Mile, which is the final event of the 2002 Formula USA National Dirt Track Series.

Here’s the rest of the Formula USA press release…

Along with winning the 2002 Superbike Championship Series, Nicky has been competing in several dirt track events, winning the Springfield TT and Short Track plus the Peoria TT. After signing a multi-million dollar contract with Honda to compete in the 2003 MotoGP Series, this could be the final dirt track for Nicky Hayden for quite some time.

Coming off a win last weekend at the Tacoma Dome Dirt Track National, Tommy is looking to show both his younger brothers around the track at Del Mar. After his win last weekend Tommy commented, “I had a great time and look forward to racing at Del Mar.”

The youngest, Roger Lee finished 3rd behind Nicky and Tommy earlier this year at the Springfield TT, making a trio of Hayden’s on the podium. Roger joins his brother Tommy with a win at a Formula USA National, winning the Pro Single class at the Indy Mile in 2000.

Can the Hayden brothers make it another 1st, 2nd, 3rd at a dirt track national? Will this be the final dirt track race for Nicky Hayden until he returns from Europe? These and other questions will be answered at the K&N Del Mar Motorcycle weekend.

Additionally, six-time US Trails champion Geoff Aaron will be performing his balancing act all weekend, while the Del Mar weekend freestyle motocross show also returns to round out this exciting line up of events.

This year’s Grand Marshall duties are shared by three legendary racers, including Joe Leonard 3-time Grand National Champion (1954, ’56, ’57), Carroll Resweber 4-time Grand National Champion (1958-’61) and Scott Parker 9-time Grand National Champion (1988-91, ’94-’98).

Tickets are available by calling 310/547 9898, all TicketMaster outlets or charge by phone 619/220-TIXS, participating Harley-Davidson and other motorcycle dealers, and during the week of the show at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.
