Vuillemin Fined

| February 25, 2002

We contacted AMA motocross manager Duke Finch by cell phone this morning to see if any penalties had been handed out in regards to the David Vuillemin/Stephane Roncada incident at this weekend’s Atlanta Supercross, and Finch confirmed that Vuillemin had been fined $2000.

In a heat race, Roncada put what he termed in his post-race internet report “a clean block pass” on his fellow Frenchman. Vuillemin took exception, and later in the race took out Roncada in a corner. After the heat-race finish, Roncada ran into Vuillemin’s Yamaha, which hit the ground, and Vuillemin threw a couple of punches.

Finch said that the fine was “for actions demeaning to the sport.”

“I wouldn’t call it a fight,” Finch said. “It was more of a slap match. I talked to Roncada as well. He was upset, but he didn’t do anything harmful. He bumped into Vuillemin’s bike, but he didn’t launch the bike or do anything terrible. I told him it was unacceptable, but I didn’t feel it was worthy of a fine.”

Finch also had a talk with Chevy Trucks Kawasaki’s Ezra Lusk, who shoved Team Honda’s Ernesto Fonseca after the two went down in the main.

“I talked to Ezra about that,” Finch said. “I told him that I know he was excited in front of his home crowd, but that actions like that are not acceptable. Hands off.”
