AMA Pro Racing announced today the addition of Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, Texas, to the 2001 AMA Progressive Insurance U.S. Flat Track Championships schedule.

The new half-mile event, slated to take place under the lights on April 21, will run in conjunction with the AMA Prostar weekend being held on the quarter-mile drag-strip adjacent to the clay oval.

The event is a first for AMA Prostar boss Keith Kizer, as it marks his first effort promoting an AMA Professional Flat Track race.

“We at AMA Prostar are pleased to branch out into promoting another type of event that will help enhance the overall show and introduce the sport of drag racing to a new audience,” said Kizer in an AMA release. “Our partners in this event, Houston Raceway Park are thrilled to be responsible for bringing AMA flat-track racing back to Houston. In the heydays of flat-track racing, Houston was one of the most successful and anticipated events on the schedule.”

“We are excited to meet the demands of the motorcycle enthusiast throughout the Houston area and look forward to hosting the first multifaceted motorcycle event in many years in Houston,” said Gerald Critchfield, General Manager, Houston Raceway Park.
