Heavy rain showers once again wreaked havoc on a Bike Week staple, the AMA National Hot Shoe Series round at Daytona Municipal Stadium.

The traditional Friday night show was canceled this evening after showers, which were intermittent but heavy all day, spoiled the racing surface for good while the scratch qualifying heats were underway. The event will not be rescheduled.

The cancellation is another in a series of rain-soaked washouts that have created a dirt track drought during Bike Week 2003. Earlier this week, both Pro-Am races at the Volusia County Fairgrounds in nearby Barberville, Florida, had to be scrapped.

The Daytona Hot Shoe cancellation also means that those teams who have had precious little testing time, many of them with all-new equipment, will really be rolling the dice at tomorrow night's AMA/Progressive Insurance U.S. Flat Track Series opener - if it runs according to schedule. If tomorrow night's race is rained out, the contingency plan calls for a rescheduled event on Sunday night, following the Daytona 200.
